Mondelēz International focuses its strategic efforts on three prominent drivers of carbon emissions at play in the food and beverage sector: the changing use of land, including deforestation; emissions related to farming; and use of fossil fuels. To effectively bring these three strategies to life, the company main focus areas and created reduction roadmaps for each which includes, shifting our ingredient supply chains away from sources where deforestation occurs; focusing on regenerative agriculture that uses ecological principles to sustain and restore degraded soils; and embracing renewable energy sources and low-impact, more sustainable packaging.
Climate Milestone
2025
- The Beijing factory has achieved 100% use of renewable electricity for product manufacturing.
- Mondelēz China has become the first market in Mondelēz’s Asia, Middle East, and Africa (AMEA) region where all self-owned factories use 100% renewable electricity for product manufacturing.2024
- In April 2024, the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) successfully validated the Group’s full value chain target: to reduce absolute end-to-end carbon emissions by approximately 35% by 2030 and to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050 from a 2018 baseline. This includes a 50.4% reduction in total absolute Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions within the same timeframe, aligned with the 1.5°C reduction pathway.
- Compared to the 2018 baseline, end-to-end greenhouse gas emissions have been reduced by approximately 12%; about 96% of the Group’s product packaging is now designed to be recyclable.2023
- From 2022 to 2023, Mondelēz International's total emissions showed a downward trend. In 2023, total emissions amounted to 30,978,000 metric tons of CO₂e, a reduction of approximately 1,338,000 metric tons compared to 32,316,000 metric tons in 2022—representing a decrease of about 4.1%. Scope 3 emissions in 2023 also declined by approximately 2.2% compared to 2022.
- Published the formalized Carbon Accounting Manual.2022
- Through new technologies and various energy-saving and emission-reduction projects, Mondelēz China achieved a 20% increase in production in 2022 compared to the 2018 baseline year, while reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 43%, demonstrating that business growth and sustainable development can go hand in hand.
